I actually had a guy give me a story on Halloween last year. We were outside
the Walgreens on 16th and Thomas and this guy comes up and says he had just
been in a car accident and his car was totalled. He said he lived in Tucson
and needed some money to get home. He had a bandage wrapped around a pretty
bad looking leg wound.. but it was halloween so we weren't buying it. We
didn't have any money to give him anyway so we weren't lying when we told
him we couldn't help.
About a month an a half ago my friend and I were at the Manuels on 26th
street and Indian School. My friend was outside having a ciggarette and the
same guy drove up in a new looking SUV and gave her the same story he had
given me last halloween. Stangely enough, he still had the same leg injury.
She was short on cash that day also so she politely declined, luckily. Then
I told her about my run-in with him on Halloween.
Then about a month ago (only a week and a half later) I was out with my
other friend, my sister and her fiance. We were walking around at the
Camelback Colonade (20th and Camelback) and the very same guy pulls up in
the exact same SUV and gets the attention of my sister's fiance. I was
walking over to see what was going on just in time to hear THE EXACT SAME
STORY! And guess what? He STILL had the same injury! Finally I had had
enough of this guy, as my sister and her fiance were listening to his story
I ran up to them and right in his face I said "Don't give this guy any
money!" Then I told them (in front of him) that he had given me that story
almost a year ago and our friend the same story just a couple weeks before.
I informed him that he really should get that injury checked out sometime
since it hasn't seemed to heal in almost a year. Then I walked off dragging
my friends with me.
I really hate that you can't trust anyone these days. But I do believe that
giving them money isn't the answer. When I used to volunteer for the St.
Vincent de Paul pantry across town (in my grandparents neighorhood) I would
carry a business card with the information for the pantry on it and how to
get help. If I came across a begger I would give them the card and if I had
extra waterbottles on my I would give them a water too.
Perhaps we should look up the information for the closest homeless shelters
and help centers? I can print up some cards and pass them out at the next
meeting (or whatever I can make it to, since meetings always fall on a
school night for me). I suppose I could send them with whomever is going to
the meeting.
I'll have to look into that information first though!

I think we should have stop signs on all our neighborhood intersections. It
would cut down on people taking short cuts and also save lives.
Prop 107 is a NO for me. If married people need prop 107 to save their
marriage then heaven help us all.
Please don't give homeless people money in our neighborhood. It only
encourages more homeless people to come to this neighborhood. I had a guy
ask for money today because he couldn't locate his family and some family
member had been killed in an auto accident. I told him to try the local
church down the block and he proceeded to wander the rest of the street
searching out neighbors in their yards to approach. Most of the homeless
panhande for a living so they do work - not a profession for me, seems
harder than working 40 hours plus a week.
