Subject: the Virginia meeting

In case you didn't make it last night, the preliminary design for the Virginia traffic calming looks the same as the temporary test plan last spring-- circle at 8th Street, bumpouts from 8th to Dayton, median from Dayton to 12th Street. There'll be a copy of it at the October 5th general meeting if you didn't get to see it.

The contractor has been hired (Aztec. Same one that built 12th/Oak circle.) They are surveying the street now and plan to break ground when North High lets out for summer 2007. They hope to be done before fall semester starts. (No comment.)

In the meanwhile, Phoenix Arts & Culture will do their Call for Artists any day now for the median barrier south of North High. I'll share that when it comes out.

The unknown is the landscaping/lighting/"feel" of the plan. Money and maintenance is the continuing reason the engineers give for including minimal landscaping and the reason they use to exclude lights, art, etc. Neighbors last night offered to provide palo brea seedlings, do the plantings, see to trimming, maybe extend their drip systems into an adjacent bumpout... They can have my palm tree, which is only 200 away... And Wayne will surely have another bumper crop of aloe by then...

Ideas anyone? If you didn't make it to the meeting last night to share them, the City's comment form is attached, with mailing info at the bottom. Or you can email sherry.williams at phoenix.gov but be sure to include the Streets Project# and your name/address with your comments.

Other stuff:
12th Oak circle: Word from the street is that the historic lighting goes in around the circle in the next few days. And that the dead tree will be replaced with another Sissoo (??) when the weather is kinder to a sapling.

North High: The plans for their school bond improvements are still in the works, but delayed, and slimmed down from their original ideas. A curb cut will give waiting cars a pullout along Virginia, westbound, between 12th and Dayton. The chainlink fence on the southern edge will be replaced to match the wrought iron fence along Thomas. They still promise an on-campus waiting area for the kids, shaded, but had no plans to show. The track in the southeast corner will be rebuilt, with dustproof surface (and available to neighbors to use if anyone's interested.) A new wing is being added to the building on the east side too... We've invited the school district to bring plans to a general meeting.

I think that's it--Maureen
