Take advantage of our southwestern heritage and use chile powder.  Sprinkle it in holes where you know the rodents to be, and across threshholds that you know won't be used by pets.  You can make a spray with water and cayenne pepper powder and spray plants and garden areas.  Rodents hate chile peppers and the sting of the taste and smell.  It's a great alternative for prevention.
