Are you sure they aren't roof rats? There was an article in the Republic 
(yesterday or today, I'm not sure which paper I was reading this morning) 
about roof rats being a major problem again this year in the Arcadia 
neighborhood and in surrounding neighborhoods of north and central Phoenix.

There is some information about roof rats, how to identify them and how to 
get rid of them (and how to prevent them, for others on the list) at this

The website is actually pretty helpful on it's own for any kind of household

My husband got up late last night to let the dog out and saw the critter run 
up a pillar in my house over the door trim, then over a beam in the roof, 
then down the other pillar into its hole.  So I set a trap on said beam, and 
snap-a-rooney, I caught me a BIG mouse!  it wasn't a rat, I am telling 
myself that!

So I'm just gonna trap all the corners and beams in the house!
