Artwork in the 12th St. roundabout

Dorothy Hurd hurd at eappreferred.com

Maureen and all, I'm a little concerned about the idea of "artwork" on the
roundabout. It is my understanding that the plan is to landscape the area
which would include a tree? And I think a tree is a great idea. It will
visually block the street from a distance, which I think we want. Not so
sure what is meant by artwork and where it would go. Could someone give us
an idea of what that might be? I'm not anti-art, I was an art major, but
maybe I'm anti bad public art like the white thing across McDowell Rd. (Now
I'll get messages from all the people who like the white thing.)

Dear Concerned Neighbors and Friends,

I, like everyone, am outraged by the series of terrible crimes that have
been occurring in our community over the past 14 months or more, including
the crimes of the so called "Baseline Rapist" as well as potentially two
other offenders. These crimes have attracted much media attention and
increased fears in our community. Our hearts go out to the innocent victims
of these criminals.

I wanted to contact you to let you know the Phoenix Police Department is
conducting a thorough investigation to catch these criminals. The City
Council has authorized the necessary resources and the Police Department has
committed an unprecedented amount of manpower and resources, including over
100 Officers to this investigation. Phoenix has one of the best Police
Departments in the country and I have full confidence these criminals will
be caught and prosecuted.

To fully inform the public of the ongoing efforts, the City of Phoenix
Police Department will be hosting a community forum tonight at 7 p.m.
Wednesday, July 12th, at Loma Linda School 2002 E. Clarendon in the multi
purpose room. This informational meeting is being held to address the
concerns of the community, provide an overview of Police efforts to date and
to share safety information. The police are also providing tips to citizens
to follow during these times, such as always being aware of your
surroundings, having a plan if a situation occurs and to call Police for any
suspicious activity.

The Police Department is asking the public to help solve these crimes. For
more information on these investigations and to report any suspicious
activity please call Silent Witness at 480-948-6377 or visit their web site
at www.silentwitness.org.

Thank you for your continued commitment to our community and please feel
free to contact me at 602-262-7491 with any questions or comments.

Sincerely,

Greg Stanton
Councilman
City of Phoenix

The 12th/Oak roundabout remains "on hold," awaiting utility relocation
scheduled for two weeks out. Once that is finished, the Streets
Transportation department estimates it will take another four more weeks to
complete the project. (Their idea of "complete" doesn't include art, so
we--as a neighborhood--still need to figure that one out.

What happened to the Virginia plan? Word is that it took some time for city
staff to figure out and find monies for the project. But they did it. The
city estimates that construction will begin on Virginia in late spring 2007.
Monthly updates will be coming your way, so stay tuned. Public arts says
"yes," they are definitely in on this one.

Speed table on 13th Street near Coronado Park: The traffic committee has
done the legwork, and we are now awaiting the final signature/petition form
to try one speed "table" on 13th near Granada. Speed tables are not the
norm. But if it works well for us, speed tables may be added to the Streets
Transportation "toolbox," adding another option to the traditional hump to
address speeding problems on local streets. (Just ask if you want more info
on speed tables. Wayne loves to share pictures and weblinks to info.)

More traffic solutions are underway in this year's Fight Back Southwest. If
you live from Oak south to I-10, and from 7th east to 16th Street: the FBSW
meets the third Wednesday of every month. Plan to attend next Wednesday:
July 19th, 6-7 pm, Emerson School Media Room, Palm and 10th Street.

In the meanwhile, drive safely.
