A Day at the Shelter

In a world of big important stories about Irag or the bird flu or
Britney Spears, some of the important smaller stories often get lost.
"A Day at the Shelter" is an important story written and photographed
by my friend Sherrie Buzby, a photojournalist at The Arizona Republic.
Many of us have no clue how many hundreds of animals must be euthanized
daily just in Phoenix due to the irresponsibility and ignorance of many
supposedly "pet loving" owners – and statistics show the problem seems
to be getting much, much worse. However, it is also a story about the
humanity of the AHS workers in their daily struggle to save animals and
not lose hope.

Here are direct links to the article and the slide show about this
growing problem and the hundreds-of-thousands of innocent animals who
must pay the ultimate price for our sometimes reckless vanity.

*Note that the newspaper is a business that keeps track of hits on
stories and pictures, so if this receives a lot of traffic it will
influence their editorial choice of whether or not to cover this issue
more extensively in the future. Click early and click often, and don't
be shy about forwarding it to others. It might help spread the word and
actually influence the news process:
