Hi this could be quite important to Greater Coronado, and perhaps
could lead to improvements for
our share of McDowell Rd.
I hope to attend but am not sure yet if I can. Anyone interested?
Thanks, Steve P.

Subject: McDowell Road Redevelopment Plan
Hi All,
Question: Are you available on Thursday, June 29, at 4PM to meet with
Doug Lingner to move ahead with the McDowell Road Redevelopment Plan?
(Mayor Gordons State of the City presentation at the Orpheum is at
5PM, so you may be downtown anyway.)
Background:
In January/February, we exchanged several emails regarding a McDowell
Road Redevelopment Plan. A group of us met with various City
Departments including City Managers Office, Historic Preservation,
Streets, and Neighborhood Services. The recommendations of the City
staff were: 1) TEA-21 grants are limited in size and require lots of
advance paperwork; 2) key components of the attached concept are
implementable and could be pursued with specific City Departments or
other public Agencies.
Updates:
1) The Bond election approved $2.6 Million for a review of options for
the Fairgrounds, in case the State decides to sell the property and move
the State Fair to an outlying location.
2) We made good progress in crime control, and NSD implemented a series
of inspections, code enforcement, that ultimately led to an abatement
action against a 32 unit apartment complex on the North side of
McDowell between 13th and 15th Avenues.
3) The City Council on June 21 initiated an extension of the Historic
Overlay to include McDowell between 11th and 15th Avenues.
4) ASU Downtowns opening on August 21 will have a major impact on all
of the historic neighborhoods around McDowell. Dean Wellington Reiter
of the College of Design made a presentation to the Encanto-Palmcroft
neighborhood on Monday. He subsequently indicated that the Colleges
Community Design Studio may be willing to work on a McDowell Road
Redevelopment Plan. For info on this program, please see:
http://www.asu.edu/caed/JUDP/html/JUDPMission.htm
Proposal:
Councilman Lingner is willing to discuss McDowell Road next Thursday at
4PM. Encanto-Palmcroft has already conveyed its concerns about the
Historic Overlay to Councilman Lingner. Since Councilman Lingners time
is limited, I thought the time could be used to discuss an overall plan
for McDowell Road. Doug Lingner was very much involved two years ago in
the discussions about the Fairgrounds, and was the principal mover in
including the $2.6million in the Bond election. A McDowell Road
Redevelopment Plan dovetails nicely with the budgeted work on the
Fairgrounds, and could be a nice milestone for our Vice-Mayor, who now
has a new interest in Historic Preservation.
The attachment was used for our February meeting and needs to be
updated. Please let me know if: a) you continue to be interested; and
b) are available next Thursday at 4PM.
