1st Home and Heritage Fair at Glendale Civic Center offers workshops for
historic home enthusiasts

Enthusiasts of historic homes and properties can participate in a day's
worth of workshops and events Saturday at the first Home and Heritage Fair
at the Glendale Civic Center (5750 W. Glenn Dr.). The fair is part of the
Arizona Preservation Foundation's annual conference, which continues through
Saturday. Although the foundation has organized an annual conference for
four years, this is the first year it incorporated the heritage fair.
"We've had a homeowner track in the conference before, but it was tough for
the public to come on a weekday," said Jim McPherson, president of the
foundation. "So we built it out to be more of a home and garden show on the
weekend."
The fair will feature vendors, booths and guest speakers discussing a
variety of topics related to historic properties. Below is a detailed
schedule of workshops and events for Saturday's event:
. RESEARCHING YOUR HOME AND COMMUNITY
10-11 a.m. and 1-2 p.m.: "How to Research Your Historic Home and
Neighborhood"
John Jacquemart of the Phoenix Historic Preservation Commission will offer
tips on how to locate records for historic homes and neighborhoods.
11 a.m.-noon and 2-3 p.m.: "Researching Historic Neighborhoods: A Case
Study"
Jodey Elsner and Lindsey Vogel, graduate students at Arizona State
University, will discuss how to gather documents about existing historic
neighborhoods.
. HISTORIC HOME IMPROVEMENT 101
10-11 a.m. and 1-2 p.m.: "Rehabilitation for Beginners"
Don Ryden of Ryden Architects will instruct how to rehabilitate a historic
home.
11 a.m.-noon and 2-3 p.m.: "Remodeling Your Historic Home: A Case Study"
Lori Green, a homeowner in Glendale's Catlin Court district, will discuss
her remodeling experiences.
. BUYING AND SELLING HISTORIC PROPERTIES
10-11 a.m. and 1-2 p.m.: "Financial Incentives for Historic Homes"
William Collins of the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office will
discuss financial incentives for historic homes and properties.
11-noon and 2-3 p.m.: "How to Buy and Sell Historic Homes"
Don Mertes of the Historic Phoenix Group and Realty Executives will provide
information on how to buy or sell a historic property.
. NEIGHBORHOOD AND COMMUNITY ADVOCACY
10-11 a.m.: "Who's Who in Preservation"
Jim McPherson of the Arizona Preservation Foundation and Alison King of
Modern Phoenix Neighborhood Network will discuss key individuals related to
historic preservation.
11-noon: "Advocating for Preservation"
Heather MacIntosh of Preservation Action of Washington, D.C., lobbies for
federal legislation affecting historic preservation and will talk about ways
to promote preservation.
1-2 p.m.: "Getting Your Message Across"
Jim McPherson of the Arizona Preservation Foundation will provide tips and
resources on educating others about historic preservation and designation.
2-3 p.m.: "Taking Your Board from Good to Great"
This session deals with volunteer organization issues, such as human
resources, financial management and fund-raising.
3-4 p.m.: "Preservation Roundtable"
